Mahler auf der Couch

Austria/Germany, 2010, feature
100 minutes
German with English subtitles
Directors: Percy Adlon and Felix Adlon

The great composer Gustav Mahler (Johannes Silberschneider) has problems. His beloved, headstrong wife Alma (Barbara Romaner) is having an affair with the young architect Walter Gropius. Alma both worships her famous husband and chafes under his domination and her agreement to give up her own musical ambitions. Tormented and desperate for help, Mahler tracks down Sigmund Freud in Holland and begs for treatment. Initially reluctant, Freud consents in this exuberant, funny and moving imagining of the real-life passionate doomed marriage set among Vienna’s cultural elite 100 years ago. A sensory feast of art, sex and celebrity, the film is co-written and co-directed by Percy Adlon (Baghdad Café, Sugarbaby) and his son.
