FATHER'S FOOTSTEPSComme Ton Pére
Israel/France, 2008, video, feature95 minutesFrench, Arabic and Hebrew with English subtitlesDirector: Marco Carmel
A rambunctious, tight-knit Tunisian Jewish family moves from Israel to Paris in 1970, only to find the better life they dreamed of suddenly disrupted. Charming and devoted father Felix (Gad Elmaleh) falls in with a Sephardi gangster and turns to a life of crime to support his family. Fiercely protective mother Mirieille (Yaël Abecassis, Live and Become, WJFF 2006) and youngest son Michel are left loving, but questioning the man they thought they knew. Drawing on events and characters from his childhood, first-time director Carmel seamlessly blends drama and comedy to create an honest coming-of-age story and, in the end, an uplifting portrait of a family re-defining what "the good life" means to them.
