THE YEAR THAT WAS: FILMMAKERS OF 5774

As Rosh Hashanah approaches, we honor the work of three seminal filmmakers who passed away in the Jewish year of 5774: Assi Dayan, Paul Mazursky and Eli Wallach.

BOB & CAROL & TED & ALICE
Dir. Paul Mazursky (105min, USA, 1969)
Narrative

A satirical comedy concerning two couples caught up in the sexual revolution of the late '60s..

PAUL MAZURSKY
“My movies aren't sentimental, they just have sentiment.”

LIFE ACCORDING TO AGFA
Dir. Assi Dayan (100min, Israel, 1992)
In Hebrew with English subtitles
Narrative

The film centers on a Tel Aviv pub and its multicultural clientele; after a group of chauvinist soldiers are kicked out one evening, the unintended consequences are greater than anyone could have imagined.
ASSI DAYAN
“I think I’ve lived enough for several people. It’s time to summarize, to take stock. So here it is: There are 80 movies I’ve acted in, 16 I’ve written and directed, nine Oscars” — a reference to the Israeli Oscar — “three lifetime achievement awards, and besides that, thousands of newspaper articles, one novel, three books of poetry, three and a half years in psychiatric wards, three suicide attempts, two arrests, three wars, four weddings, four children, but before everything, and before God, one father, with one eye.”

  THE LINEUP
Dir. Don Siegel (86 min, USA, 1958)
Narrative

In this classic film noir directed by the legendary Don Seigel, Eli Wallach shines as psychopathic gangster in San Francisco who uses unsuspecting travelers to traffic heroin. When one of the deliveries goes awry, a cop gets killed, throwing the police into action.
ELI WALLACH
“Well, I've got the appetite, still, to act. I love to act. And I don't care where it is. It could be in a tiny theater in Chicago, or it can be on a huge stage in New York or a movie in the middle of the jungle in Cambodia.”
