Dir. Woody Allen (93min, USA, 1977) Narrative
"Don't you see the rest of the country looks upon New York like we're left-wing, communist, Jewish, homosexual pornographers? I think of us that way sometimes and I live here."
–Alvy Singer (Woody Allen) in Annie Hall
The same year Star Wars came out, Annie Hall, Woody Allen's neurotic discourse on love, sex and himself, swept through the Academy, taking home four Oscars - Best Picture, Director, Screenplay and Actress (Diane Keaton).
At times hilarious, nonsensical, romantic and tragic, this is truly one of the greatest and most sincere films to ever touch American screens. Even those who don't find Allen's style (or personal life) all that appealing, will find in Annie Hall a brilliant reaffirmation of what it means to be in love. Featuring a marvelous supporting cast, including Tony Roberts, Carol Kane, Christopher Walken and Paul Simon.
THE PURPLE ROSE OF CAIRO
Dir. Woody Allen (82min, USA, 1985) Narrative
“It's a sweet, lyrically funny, multi- layered work that again demonstrates that Woody Allen is our premier film maker who, standing something over 5 feet tall in his sneakers, towers above all others.” – Vincent Canby, New York Times
While sitting in a Jersey movie theater, escaping the Depression through yet another viewing of The Purple Rose of Cairo, something strange happens to unhappy housewife Cecilia (Mia Farrow): male lead Tom Baxter (Jeff Daniels) spies her from the cinema screen, and instantly stricken, leaves his two-dimensional world and steps down into hers. Soon, other characters try to make the same exit, and actor Gil Shepherd (Daniels again) is called in from the coast to set things right. One of Woody Allen’s most beloved and original films, The Purple Rose of Cairo is both a heartbreaking look at the difference between fantasy and reality and a touching acknowledgment of the cinema’s ability to sweep us away.
