The Sugarman Award was established in 1994 by Joan Sugarman to help thank, encourage and inspire writers and illustrators of Jewish children’s literature.  Every other year, one award in the amount of $1,000 is presented for best Jewish children’s book.  The presentation will take place at the Hyman S. and Freda Bernstein Jewish Literary Festival at the Washington DC Jewish Community Center in Fall 2009.

Currently, we’re looking for books published between October 1, 2008 and October 1, 2009.  Three copies of each book should be submitted, with a $25 entry fee, received no later than June 15, 2009.  Books should present a Judaic perspective or include Jewish characters, worthy of emulation and reflecting Jewish heritage in an honest and meaningful way.

We’d love to see what you have available, so please send it along now.  Before making your submission, please download the complete award guidelines from the bottom of this page for all pertinent details.  For any further questions, contact Lili Kalish Gersch, Director of Literature, Music & Dance.
