The Robert Brustein Residency
SPRING FORWARD, FALL BACK

World Premiere by Robert Brustein
Directed by Wesley Savick

Developed in Association with the Vineyard Playhouse

The great scholar, director, critic and now prolific playwright Robert Brustein unveils a deeply personal new play about successive generations of fathers and sons and their continuing conflicts over music. An esteemed conductor is compelled to visit the formative stages of his life, returning to the rich, immigrant culture of an Upper West Side tenement filled with love and dissension.

Other Residency Special Events:
SHLEMIEL THE FIRST
BRUSTEIN LECTURE: “DRAMA AS SECULAR RELIGION”

January 9–February 18, 2007
SLEEPING ARRANGEMENTS
World premiere by Laura Shaine Cunningham
Directed by Delia Taylor

Based on her best-selling, award-winning memoir, Laura Shaine Cunningham's new comedy is an imaginative, eloquent coming-of-age saga of family rejuvenation. When young Lily's mother dies, her two eccentric, bachelor uncles must improvise a plan to care for her. Joined by Lily's kleptomaniac grandmother, this decidedly non-traditional family manages to create a loving, almost normal existence for our plucky heroine.

Featuring: Halo Wines, Paul Morella, Tessa Klein

March 7–April 15, 2007
Sherry Glaser in
FAMILY SECRETS
by Sherry Glaser and Greg Howells
New York production
directed by Bob Balaban

With all "the freshness and surprise of the latest downtown discovery" (Variety), this smash Off-Broadway hit is an intimate portrait of five members of a Jewish family transplanted from the Bronx to Southern California. Both "utterly hilarious" (The New York Times) and deeply moving, Sherry Glaser's finely etched performance includes broad physical comedy, midlife meltdowns, and audience sing-alongs to "Sunrise Sunset." Cutting edge comedy with a dollop of schmaltz!

Presented in partnership with the J's Stuart S. Kurlander Program for Gay & Lesbian Outreach and Engagament.

EITHER OR
World premiere by Thomas Keneally
Directed by Daniel DeRaey

Thomas Keneally, author of Schindler's List—subject of Steven Spielberg's Academy Award-winning motion picture—delivers a devastating, impeccably researched work that tells the true-life, war-time story of Kurt Gerstein (Paul Morella), an adored young German caught on the wrong side of history. Initially supportive of the ascension of Hitler, Gerstein quickly becomes disillusioned and moves to sabotage shipments of Zyklon B and alert the Vatican about the atrocities to which he bears witness as an SS officer.

Featuring: Paul Morella, Ralph Cosham and John Lescault
