A Lecture by Dr. Grace Tiffany
Author of The Turquoise Ring

Theater J and the Jewish Historical Society present a free lecture by Dr. Grace Tiffany, a Renaissance scholar who has authored The Turquoise Ring, a fictional prequel to The Merchant of Venice setting Shylock's family history against the background of the Spanish Inquisition and his subsequent experiences against a Venice contemporary with the play. The lecture will take place in the Washington DCJCC's Community Hall. Dr. Tiffany will join the audience afterward for a buffet dinner ($20/person) and stay for the evening performance of Shylock. A new play by University of Maryland Professor Michael Olmert about the Jewish Dr. Lopez who may have inspired Shakespeare’s portrait of Shylock. Dr Lopez was Queen Elizabeth’s personal physician and secretly practiced Judaism. Olmert’s historical play tells of how Dr Lopez convinced Shakespeare to write a play with a Jewish character.
