What is Everything but the Turkey (EBTT)?

EBTT is an event organized by the Morris Cafritz Center for Community Service, the Community Service Department at the Washingotn DC Jewish Community Center. The event is held the Monday and Wednesday evenings prior to Thanksgiving. Volunteers prepare over 10,000 servings of food for the homeless and hungry in the DC area.

Everything but the Turkey? Why don't we make the turkey?
You may be wondering why we prepare everything but the turkey for a Thanksgiving feast.  Well, there are two reasons for this.  First, this is necessary in order to keep with the Jewish dietary laws of the building, it's not easy to get 1000s of Kosher turkeys. The second reason, we do not have the space to cook such a large number of turkeys! The turkeys will be provided by our partner, DC Central Kitchen.

Can I bring my children to the event?
YES! Everyone is welcome. We do request that youth under the age of 16 are accompanied by an adult. Parents/Guardians are responsible for ensuring the safety of their children. Please remember that there are knives being used at some of the food preparation stations.

Last year I brought my kids and we made PB&J sandwiches (or cookies). I don't see these listed.
All
of the food we prepare is donated to DC Central Kitchen and the close to 100 agencies they prepare food for. We consult with them on their needs and this year they said they'd prefer us not to make sandwiches or sweets. Register to help make healthy snack bags, it's is a great activity for children and families.

Where is the event?
EBTT is held at the Washington DCJCC at the corner of 16th and Q (1529 16th Street NW). Please enter the building through the doors on Q Street.

Is the Washington DCJCC accessible by public transportation? If I am driving, where should I park?
The 16th Street J is closest to the Dupont Circle Metro stop on the red line. Take the North exit and head east on Q Street. If you choose to drive there is parking within a couple blocks of the Center.  For more information, please visit http://www.washingtondcjcc.org/about/ and scroll down to the “Directions and Parking” section.

What should I do when I get to the Center?
Please check in at our check-in tables. They can remind you what table you are volunteering at, we'll do an introduction and then you will join the other volunteers at your station to begin preparing food. On Monday we will be working in the Community Hall and on Wednesday we will be in both the Community hall and the gymnasium.

I am not Jewish, can I participate?
Anybody and everybody is welcome to volunteer for this event.  We encourage anyone interested in celebrating the spirit of Thanksgiving to participate.

Why is there a $13 charge?
This event is expensive! There are a lot of supplies and food purchased to help this event be a success. Your $13 is going to help cover the cost of food in our rising economy. Thank you for your support.

Are walk-ins allowed on the day of the event?
NO, unfortunately we cannot accommodate any walk-ins. Please register online in advance.

Is there anything special I need to wear or bring with me to the event?
We will provide everything. Please wear closed toe shoes for safety reasons. Everyone must also cover their hair. We will provide hair nets but if you'd prefer you are welcome to wear your own hat. The only other thing needed is your energy and the want to volunteer.
