From our volunteers...

I just wanted to say thank you again for this afternoon. It was a truly meaningful experience and I know the teens loved it. You ran the program so well and really made us feel welcome and involved. The teens are already posting on facebook about it and how much they enjoyed the experience. What's more, I'm so thankful that you gave them the chance to break out of their comfort zones and connect with the individuals who need help the most. It was a fantastic way to spend an afternoon and I know I speak for everyone when I say thank you!

It was terrific spending the afternoon and evening with you on our December 25th Day of Service project with JAM DC. A special thanks to Erica and Gena at the DCJCC for creating this project for our group - it was perfect!
How amazing it was to see how all of our work in the kitchen came together so well -- it probably helped that I was outside of the kitchen most of the time. It was also such a meaningful adventure to actually distribute our work in Franklin Square.

 Warm regards,

Stu

Thank you so much for your help and for putting on such a well organized and worthwhile program, Everything But The Turkey.  This was at least our 5th time participating as a family.

Best regards,

Shara A.

Belated thanks for allowing me and my girls to come down this year to volunteer. They felt so special by handling your tasks and feeling needed. I can't thank you enough for carving out those projects to meet their needs -- you were incredibly giving of your own time! I'm continually impressed each time we attend any of your functions. They're well organized and spirited. I love being able to raise my girls in that environment, with that mindset to help others, and I'm grateful for your help.

Thanks again,

Stephanie

I am a participant from the program Habonim. We volunteered to be part of the JCC Behrand Builders on MLK Day, Monday January 16th. I wanted to thank you for the opportunity/experience of being able to paint. It was enjoyable to prep and paint, and I felt like the work we did could really make a difference to the community. Thanks again.

Communities In Schools of the Nations Capital has had the privilege of working with Behrend Builders on several public school-based projects in Ward 8.....Thanks to Behrend Builders, the children at Turner Elementary School now have access to fun, new playground activities as well as a freshly painted auditorium.  Communities In Schools looks forwarding to continuing to work in partnership with Behrend Builders on behalf of Washington DC's youth and is grateful for all that its dedicated staff does to provide children with safe and inviting places to learn and play.

Dear Behrend Builders Staff,

I would like to offer my sincerest appreciation for hosting seven volunteers from Ithaca College. With the help of your organization, Behrend Builders, the group was able to serve meals to residents of Washington DC during Good Deeds Day. It is organizations like Behrend Builders that help students grow and learn through experience.

One student on the trip had this to say: “I really liked all of the organizations that we worked with during the trip. They were all friendly, and passionate about their work. It was inspiring to see so many people helping out on Good Deeds Day, too!”

Sincerely,

Don Austin, Assistant Director of Community Service at Ithaca College

From the people and organizations we serve...

I am writing to commend Behrend Builders on their outstanding work in the Washington, DC community at large. Their work connecting skilled and unskilled volunteers alike to service-learning opportunities has directly impacted Mary’s Center on several occasions. From spearheading painting and other beautification projects at our Ontario Road location to donating and handing out refreshments for over 1,000 of our participants at our 2012 community holiday party, Behrend Builders has consistently been there to support our mission and work. Their staff has taken a personal interest in our work, and we have come to know and respect them for their professionalism and work ethic as well as friendliness and thoughtfulness. No task is ever too small and no cause unworthy of their aid.

Sincerely,
Maria Gomez, President and CEO of Mary's Center

I was just marveling and thinking and thinking that I had never met people like you guys in my entire life.  You accepted us, regardless of race, nationality, or how disorganized we are and you love us anyway.  There is nothing pretentious about you--when appropriate, you get angry, you admonish, and you keep on giving and giving.  You don't look down on us or denigrate us.  After thinking these two days and not coming up with ways to repay you, I just began to pray for you all. As you may have noticed, I am not someone who likes to hang around friends.  I can sincerely say that I consider you beyond friends, but you are my family."

-Ms. J

Just wanted to thank y’all for coming to spend the holiday with our families. Kobie & Jackie had glowing reviews from both locations and we look forward to your group again next year. Thanks!!

It feels good to know that our Good Lord has sent you Mr. Randy Bacon, Mr. Danny Obeler and the Behrend Builders volunteers to be my advocates,
patrons and intercessors on my behalf during my time of need.  I was sleeping on the floor with my 3 cats and because of Mr. Randy Bacon's compassion, love and care for all people I was able to get 2 twin beds, 2 twin sheet sets, blankets and pillow cases.

CAMP YAD b'YAD

From the campers...

  • I came to this camp blindly.  I had no idea what to expect but I was pleasantly surprised.  I enjoyed all of the activities and they all made me feel like I was making a direct positive impact on the community.
  • I made new friends and I got community service hours and a sense knowing that I helped a lot of people.
  • I’m taking away the knowledge that I can make a difference and that I can change the world.
  • I have learned that even doing a little community service can make a difference.  I have also realized that I am very lucky.
