HUNGER RELIEF
Hunger Action - Prepare meals to combat hunger
The Washington DCJCC wants to help combat hunger and hunger stereotypes by supporting our local community kitchens and raising hunger awareness. The first and third Thursdays, we meet at the Washington DCJCC to prepare food that will be donated to the DC Central Kitchen. Hunger isn’t specific to homeless individuals — it’s a much more widespread problem. Our project activities are open and appropriate for kids of all ages. Plus, not only are we a great group of service-oriented members, but we’re quite lively as well. So, come help others while making new friends. Check out the Center calendar and register for Hunger Action at the 16th Street J today!
Hunger Action at DC Central Kitchen
This non-profit organization uses surplus donated food to prepare 4,500 meals every day. These meals are provided to hungry adults and children at more than 95 agencies throughout the region. Agencies receiving the meals include homeless shelters, community and youth centers, children’s after-school programs, and senior citizen lunch programs. The DC Central Kitchen also operates a three-month job training program that prepares homeless and unemployed men and women for careers in foodservice. It’s always a good group of volunteers from the Washington DCJCC who donate their time on the first Sunday of every month, from 9:00am-12:00pm. Be a part of this very valuable community service activity, Check out the Center Calendar for dates.
Gleaning: Harvest food
Gleaning is an ancient Biblical practice that instructs farmers to leave a portion of their fields unharvested so others might eat. Come join us and harvest food to be utilized by local homeless shelter. At some sites volunteers can chose to give the harvested food to their favorite charities. Come follow food from the source and meet people who enjoy the food. Check out the calendar for our projects with Common Good City Farm (typically the 4th Sunday of every month April-October).
Food Stamp Counseling
The Food Stamp Counseling is a program designed to help alleviate hunger in Washington DC. This program is designed help families apply for Food Stamps. Currently, the Food Stamps application is difficult and confusing. People who are eligible don't always know about the program, and when they do, the barriers to signing up prevent many of them from completing the process. Our program will train you to advise people on the application process and turn a long ordeal at the Food Stamp to an easier process. Whether it is once a month or once a week, this will be a helpful and valuable use of your time. Sign Up to be contacted about future training events. Together, we can alleviate hunger. For more information on the next training, please email Erica Steen or call (202) 777-3255.
